Dear families of Kindergarten Students:
Welcome:
Welcome to the Spanish Program at Collegium Charter School! My name is Señor Erickson and I am excited to be teaching your student this year! We will be learning many things together. I look forward to spending time with your student and teaching him/her Spanish!
Curriculum:
Our curriculum includes the study of basic Spanish vocabulary through listening, speaking, reading, writing (we will help to introduce and work on these last two), and culture. We will speak, sing, read, write, and LEARN SPANISH! We use the strategy of TPR (Total Physical Response), which allows students to remember vocabulary via body movements, songs, mnemonics, and other ideas. This makes learning fun for everyone. Topics of study this year are: greetings, class objects, numbers, days of the week, colors, shapes, and body parts. We will also study Hispanic holidays and customs in the country of México as they happen during the year. Various material may be sent home about the topics we are learning with suggestions of ways that you can help your student practice and learn Spanish.
Grading:
Kindergarten Spanish grading procedures are as follows: Students will not have homework this year. Most of a student’s grade is based on what he/she shows me each day in class: effort, participation, and attitude toward classmates, teachers, and learning. Paper assignments are graded on a point system. Students will receive points for the work they complete correctly on assignments. Students WILL NOT receive a % grade this year. Their grades in Power School will use the standard grading system: E- Excellent, S- Satisfactory, N- Needs improvement, D- Developing, U- Unsatisfactory. Please remember that all students learn in a different way. Many students may need LOTS of practice or time to really grasp or “get” what we are doing in Spanish class. As long as students try their best and have fun, we will have a great year together!
I look forward to working with you and your student this year! I thank you in advance for your support, and I know that we are going to have a great year! Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns. I am best reached by email: [email protected]. Please also feel free to check out the website at: http://ccs-spanish.weebly.com/. Here you will find class information (lesson notes and updates) as well as useful websites for practicing and learning Spanish.
¡Muchísimas gracias! (Thank you very much)
Señor Erickson

· Ask questions after each class about what we did that day.
· Read each newsletter together and try to read or sound out all the new vocabulary words to practice speaking.
· Sing the songs using the lyrics provided in the newsletter. Some songs/chants are from cds and others created by the Spanish teachers here at CCS.
· Encourage your student to sing, speak, read, etc. as much as possible for this level.
